Vivian Godfrey

October 17, 1926 — August 20, 2021

Alexandria, MN

Vivian Eileen Godfrey was born Oct 17th, 1926. She was the 3rd of five children born to Clifford and Edna Angen of Alexandria, MN.

Vivian graduated from Alexandria high school and met her husband, Jarmon Godfrey, at the local roller rink.  They kept their romance alive throughout World War II and married upon his return.  Vivian worked for her father at “Angen Auto Sales” as a bookkeeper for 10 years before starting a family.  They went on to purchase a resort on lake Cowdry.  They ran the resort while raising their first child, Jarmon jr.

Vivian loved to read her bible and was active in Calvary Lutheran church and regularly attended bible study. She loved Jesus! Her faith was unshakeable and a perfect role model to all. She was thankful for every day she was given. She taught release time and always said her favorite students were the troublemakers!  At the end of each year, she would invite her class out to her house for breakfast and she would make each of them anything they wanted.  She had as much fun as her students!

Vivian loved to entertain, bake, and serve her specialties, Tea Rings and her fabulous Popovers with honey butter.  Many have tried to duplicate her popovers but never came close. Vivian could also eat her weight in lutefisk or watermelon.

She was an inspiration to many and always had time to visit. She always had coffee parties with china and with cloth napkins, never paper. She was up early every morning and got beautifully dressed with coordinated shoes for the day and always wore her lipstick. She had many loyal friends and was always willing to help whoever needed her.

Vivian was an avid letter writer and was always headed to the post office to mail packages or send a post card to her family and friends.  She enjoyed calling in to the “Birthday Club” on the radio to announce who was having a birthday that day. She looked forward to Crazy Days, shopping, and collecting antiques. She loved the Douglas County Fair and never missed a day each year. The marching band parade was also a must attend event! She loved Minnesota winters and Vikings Football. She was an avid cross-country skier. But, of course, her favorite thing was spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She loved her life and will be greatly missed. We are blessed to have had her in our lives.

Vivian Godfrey went home to the Lord on Aug 20th.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Jarmon Godfrey; her son, Jarmon Godfrey Jr.; her brother, Harland Angen; and sister, Lucille (Tickey) Angen.  She is survived by her sons, Dr. Marc Godfrey and wife, Nancy (Reinhardt) Godfrey, of Alexandria, Keith Godfrey and wife, Cyndy (Cook) Godfrey, of Richfield, MN; and four grandchildren, Dr. Justin Godfrey and wife, Sara (Larson), Godfrey of Alexandria, Dr. Jon Godfrey and wife, Heather (Williamson), Godfrey of Alexandria, Dakota Godfrey of Richfield, MN, and Lucas Godfrey of Richfield, MN; and four great grandchildren, Isaiah Godfrey, Owen Godfrey, Vivian Godfrey, and Griffin Godfrey of Alexandria.

We would like to say a special thanks to the fantastic staff at Winona Shores, Alexandria, and Galeon Senior Living in Osakis MN.
