Roddy Mallon-Rolfe

Roddy “Rod” Charles Mallon – Rolfe was born on December 5, 1942, in Minneapolis, Minnesota the son of Robert and Lois Mallon.  Rod was baptized at Pilgrim Heights Community Church in Minneapolis.  He lived in Minneapolis until he was about 8 years old. Rod’s mother married John Rolfe on 12/26/1950, then his family moved to Alexandria and was later adopted by John.  Rod was confirmed at the First Congregational Church in Alexandria and graduated from Alexandria High School in 1961.

Roddy met the love of his life Marvelle Schulz and on May 16, 1964 the couple was married at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Leaf Valley Township.  In February of 1964 he enlisted in the United States Army and served his country during the Vietnam War.  Rod was Honorably Discharged on February 28, 1970.

The Rolfe’s raised their family in Alexandria where Rod worked for MN Dot as a Surveyor. He also worked for the MN Dot in Bemidji and Thief River Falls. When the kids were young Randy enjoyed going fishing with his dad and Sheri and Rod would play softball and she would help with the field training of their black lab.

Rod and Marvelle enjoyed traveling and traveled to 49 of the 50 States.  They also enjoyed going on their wonderful cruise to Alaska.

He was very active in his church as elder, treasurer, and chairman.  Rod was very involved in the VFW and served as Commander from 1977-1978.  He also volunteered to drive Veterans to their appointments at the VA Clinic in St. Cloud and Minneapolis.  He enjoyed every month getting together at Travelers Inn with is high school friends for coffee.

One of his proudest moments was on Memorial Day 2018 when he received the Medal of Honor in memory of his grandfather, George Mallon.  George was one of General Pershing 100 heroes.  George was the first person buried at Fort Snelling and the main street is named after him.

Roddy died on Thursday, July 9, 2020.  He is survived by his wife, Marvelle; children:  Sheri (Terry) Whittier and Randy (Mary Beth) Rolfe; grandchildren: Max (Kaylin), Cole (Desney), Greta Rolfe, and Jacob Whittier; step grandchildren: Melissa & Tiffany Whittier; great grandson, Juniper Rolfe; brothers: James & Scott; sister-in-laws, Paula Rolfe; Delrose Peterson and Marcine Nightengale.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Bruce & Clark.

Memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 14, 2020, 2:00 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior.  Burial will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.  The service will be live streamed for those who are unable to attend.  Please leave memories of Rod on his tribute wall for the family.
