David Odell Sundgaard was born on October 21, 1956, in Sandstone, Minnesota to Roger and Betty (Behrmann) Sundgaard. The family moved to Nelson in 1969. David graduated from Jefferson High School in Alexandria in 1975. He attended Alexandria Technical College for Diesel Mechanics. At the age of 18 he started working at 3M and retired after 36 years working a wide variety of jobs.
In 1990, David moved out to his sanctuary in the woods with Judy Pieper. He loved watching and caring for all the animals. David even tried farming with his brother, which helped him provide corn that he would leave for the deer around his place. He loved nature and the outdoors. Much of his time was hunting and fishing, with his passion being fishing for walleyes. He also enjoyed cutting wood, canning produce and liked to make salsa to give to his family. Most of all, David loved spending time with his kids and grandchildren. In his younger years, David enjoyed playing billiards, driving snowmobiles, motorcycles, and cars. He also enjoyed working on them.
David died on Wednesday, March 10, 2021, at his home unexpectedly at the age of 64. He is survived by his son, Seth (Tammy) Sundgaard of Chaska; daughter, Calcie (Letina) Sundgaard of Millerville; grandchildren, Ivy and Skylar; significant other, Judy Pieper; and nine brothers and sisters. David is preceded in death by his parents, Roger and Betty; daughters, Ivy and Dulcie; and brother, Douglas.
A private celebration of life service is being planned for a later date this spring.
