Vergene made her home in Alexandria, MN where she formed lasting friendships and meaningful connections that brought her great joy.

Vergene had a heart for people and a deep love for staying in touch. She loved sweets, writing, and celebrating holidays and birthdays — always arriving with gifts and a warm smile. Her gentle nature and kind spirit made everyone feel welcome and remembered.

Vergene was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in rural Miltona and a member of First Lutheran Church in Alexandria, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Elda (Zinter) Hartfiel; her sister, Ella Jane Steidl; brother-in-law, Tim Steidl; nephew, Scott Steidl; and great-niece, Mandy Schmidt.

She is lovingly survived by her niece, Melinda (Doug) Schmidt; nephew, Gary Steidl; many first cousins; great-nephews Derick Schmidt and Dustin Schmidt; great-nieces Mindy (Jesse) Meissner and their children and Monica (Nate) Stein and their children; along with her many dear friends.

Pallbearers are Gary Steidl, Doug Schmidt, Derick Schmidt, Dustin Schmidt, Nate Stein, and Jesse Meissner. Honorary pallbearers are Melinda Schmidt, Mindy, Madelin, Myles and Marcus Meissner, Monica, Teagan, Trent and Theo Stein, and staff and friends from H. J. Jenson.

The family extends a special thank you to the staff at Prairie Community Services — especially her good friend John — for their compassion and friendship. Also, to her first cousin Pat Hartfiel, St. William’s Living Center, and Douglas County Hospice for the excellent and loving care provided to Vergene.

Vergene will be remembered for her gentle heart, her love of giving, her beautiful smile, and the way she made everyone feel special and remembered. Her kindness lives on in the many lives she touched.
