It is with shattered hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Shayne Eirich Simon—a beloved husband, dedicated father, and friend to all—on March 6, 2026, at Alomere Health in Alexandria, MN, at the age of 53. Born September 15, 1972, in Sheboygan, WI, to Donald Simon and Joy Jerving (Simon), Shayne was the second of three children. The family lived in Portage, WI, for a short time before moving to Washburn, ND, in 1977.
During high school, Shayne participated in baseball, basketball, football, speech, and the one-act play. He had many friends and always enjoyed a good chess game. Shayne graduated from Washburn High School in 1991 and immediately enlisted in the United States Navy, serving 3.5 years on active duty, including being stationed out of Charleston, SC, and Mobile, AL.
Shayne returned to North Dakota following Naval service and attended North Dakota State University, earning degrees in Natural Resource Management and Speech Communications in 1999. While attending NDSU, he enlisted in the North Dakota Army National Guard. He enjoyed the National Guard and quickly advanced, attending Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA. Shayne completed the Engineering Officer Basic Course at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. During his time in the National Guard, Shayne served on two deployments: one to Iraq and the second to Kosovo. He was extremely proud of his service to our country and retired at the rank of Major in 2013.
Shayne and Meg (Melissa Gramith) met on Valentine’s Day, 1997, through mutual college friends and were united in marriage on June 19, 1999, at Zion Lutheran Church, Anoka, MN. The couple settled in Alexandria, MN, and were blessed with four wonderful children: Cameron, Cadence, Channing, and Cora. Shayne demonstrated tremendous love for his family, telling them several times a day how much he loved them. Second only to his family was his obsession with all things Wisconsin; Shayne cheered tirelessly for the Packers, Brewers, Badgers, and Bucks.
Shayne returned to college and earned a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from St. Cloud State University. He found his passion in working with kids; a great connector, he worked hard to build deep relationships with his students. Shayne taught elementary children for more than 20 years in the Alexandria School District and spent many years working as a YMCA building supervisor, where he enjoyed endless conversations with members.
Shayne had a deep-seated passion for the game of baseball and enjoyed playing and coaching at many levels and locations over the years. On top of that, he could frequently be found on the golf course enjoying a round with friends or family. In all aspects of his children's lives, Shayne took great pride in their successes, and always emphasized the importance of their character first and foremost. His loving nature was also felt from his English Springer Spaniel friends as he was always spoiling them.
Shayne is survived by his wife, Meg; children, Cameron, Cadence, Channing, and Cora; his father, Donald Simon (Washburn, ND); sisters, Donal Hewitt (Shawn) of West Fargo, ND, and Carrie Harding (Tom) of Bismarck, ND; and several loved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Shayne was preceded in death by his mother, Joy; grandparents, Gordon and Joyce Simon, and Wesley and Alice Jerving; and his cousin, Mike Kugler.
