Robert "Bob" Schulz

April 6, 1942 — April 27, 2024

of Peoria, AZ formerly of Garfield

Robert August Schulz died peacefully in Peoria, Arizona on April 27, 2024, surrounded by his family and listening to his favorite hymns.

Bob was born on April 6, 1942, to August and Dorothy (Hass) Schulz.  He and his sister Bonnie grew up in Garfield and Alexandria, later moving to Moorhead, Minnesota.  After high school, Bob attended North Dakota State University, where he earned degrees in civil and architectural engineering.  After college, he married Dee (Schmidt) Schulz on December 23, 1967.

Bob and Dee moved to Milwaukee, where Bob worked as an engineer for the City of Milwaukee.  Bob then went to work for Morse Diesel, where he rose to the position of vice president.  At Morse Diesel, Bob worked on projects including the Sears Tower in Chicago, and the Grand Avenue Mall and Miller Brewery in Milwaukee.  Bob left Morse Diesel to work for Harnischfeger Engineering (HK Systems) before retiring.

On June 11, 1973, Bob and Dee welcomed a daughter, Heidi.  Bob and Dee’s family expanded again in 2005, when Heidi married Tom Calhoun-Lopez.  Bob gained a grandson, Tommy, in 2009, and a granddaughter, Isabel, in 2010.  Bob doted on his grandchildren.

A big man, Bob did nothing small.  He loved time with family and friends.  Bob  particularly enjoyed spending time with Dee, Heidi, and friends and family at their cottage on Lake Sinnissippi in Wisconsin.  He spent many a weekend water skiing and teaching others to get up on skis.  He loved getting together with his extended family at Lake Miltona in Minnesota.  He also cherished time with friends from the old neighborhood in Milwaukee, including at the Wisconsin Club and in Riverwood.

Besides time with family and friends, Bob loved nothing more than watching sports.  His favorites were professional football (proved by his long-suffering devotion to the Minnesota Vikings) and college basketball.  Bob was an athlete himself.  He played hockey, softball, golf, and in later years, pickleball.  Bob also enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle and loved traveling—he crisscrossed the globe with Dee and Heidi.  Active all his life, in 2010 Bob and his son-in-law Tom climbed Mount Kilimanjaro.  Bob particularly loved taking Heidi on ski trips, and he instilled in her a lifelong love of skiing.

A devout Lutheran, Bob was an active member of his Church, where his volunteer work included charitable trips to Tanzania.

Bob is survived by his wife of 57 years, his daughter and son-in-law, and his two grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents and sister.

Bob will be lovingly remembered for his big heart, his generosity of spirit, and his sense of adventure.

In lieu of flowers, please remember Bob with memorials to Ebenezer Lutheran, or a charity of your choosing.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024, 10:00 – 11:00 AM at the Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Leaf Valley with a Funeral Service at 11:00 AM.  Burial will be at the Ebenezer Cemetery.
