Richard “Richie” Edward Braun was born in Elrosa, MN to Edward J & Catherine (Wengler) Braun on August 29, 1931. One of twelve children, he was raised in a household where resources were often limited, which helped Richard develop a profound understanding of the value of hard work and dedication. He attended first grade in Elrosa and spent a time in country school before graduating from high school in Sauk Centre, MN. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War until June of 1952. He spent almost two years in England, stationed at Lakenheath Air Force Base. After discharge, he attended the University of Minnesota and began working for the US Department of Agriculture where he worked for 37 years. Richard married Marlene Mattson from Willmar, MN on January 6, 1968. They had two children, Erik and Amy.
Richard retired in 1989, and he and Marlene moved to Alexandria, MN. During retirement, he enjoyed his time at the lake, playing golf at the Alexandria Golf Club, traveling to Florida in the winter, and watching his grandchildren play sports. He also enjoyed working part time at Anderson Florist Garden Center and Greenhouse during his retirement.
Known for his cooking, Richard delighted family and friends with his delicious dishes. He was particularly famous for his stuffing, boiled dinner, biscuits and gravy, and beef stroganoff. Cooking was not merely a skill for Richard; it was a way for him to express love and care for those around him. Beyond cooking, he had a green thumb and used his skills to grow various plants. He loved his family deeply and had an exceptionally soft spot for his four grandchildren. He was a very proud Grandpa and very often could be heard bragging about the many accomplishments of all four of them.
