Phyllis Mary Kern

Phyllis was born in Browerville, MN to Thomas and Hattie (Kulick) Buhl on June 10, 1935.   After graduating from Browerville High School, she attended St. Cloud State University earning her Elementary Teaching Degree.  She taught in Swanville, Upsala, Graceville, Sauk Centre, and St. Mary’s here in Alexandria. 

While teaching in Upsala, she met her future husband, John.  They married in December 1960.  To this union, four children were born:  Michelle, David, Dan, and Mary.

After retiring, Phyllis enjoyed more time with her children and grandchildren.  She enjoyed volunteering at St. Mary’s, Elder Net, Habitat for Humanity, Bethany Coffee Shop, Woodland School, and Birthright.  She also enjoyed playing bridge. 

Phyllis is survived by her four children:  Michelle (Steve) Behm of Reno, NV, grandson Michael; David (Daena) Kern of West Fargo, ND, grandson Caleb; Dan (Naomi) Kern of Arlington, WA, grandchildren Elizabeth (Brian), Paul (Mykela) and Samuel; Mary (Shane) Weber of St. Bonifacius, MN, grandchildren Carly, Maya and Porter.     Brothers Jim (Bobbi) Buhl, Dennis (Ruth) Buhl, and Steve Buhl, sister-in-laws Redora and Pat Buhl, and many nieces and nephews. 

Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband John, parents, and brothers and sister: Jerome, Joe, Florian, Larry, Richard, Betty, Mark, and Ken.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Mary’s Trust Fund for School, Habitat for Humanity, Elder Net, or Birthright.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 28, 2024, 2:00 - 4:00 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home with a Parish Prayer Service at 2:00 PM.  Visitation will continue on Monday, April 29, 2024, 10:00 - 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM.  Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery.
