Myrna Dorothy Hunt

November 14, 1940 — January 8, 2025

Alexandria

Myrna Dorothy Iglehart Hunt, of Alexandria, MN, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2025 at age 84 with family and friends at her side after a long battle with lymphoma.

Myrna was born on November 14, 1940, to John and Eleanor Iglehart in Garrison, ND. She was raised on a dairy farm and attended country school. She was active in the Flickertail 4-H club for many years. Myrna graduated from Garrison High School in 1958. She was the first in her family to graduate from college, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the University of North Dakota. She worked as a nurse in Garrison and later at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane, where she met her future husband, Dr. Kai K Hunt. Myrna and Kai were married on August 25, 1966, in Garrison. After living in Newfoundland, Canada and Sedro Woolley, Washington, Myrna and Kai settled in Alexandria, MN, in 1971.

Myrna’s greatest passions, in addition to her family, were service and gardening. Her volunteer history was extensive and included the United Way, League of Women Voters, Boy Scouts, US Swimming, and American Red Cross. She taught religion and was a long-time member of St. Mary’s Parish. She was active in her sons’ scout troops and swim teams. One of her proudest accomplishments was all 3 sons becoming Eagle Scouts.

In 2008, she was recognized for her exceptional service to the community when she won the Service to Mankind (Sertoma) award. Myrna became a Master Gardener and was co-chair of the Terrace Learning Gardens, a community garden in Douglas County. She received several honors, including the International Master Gardener’s Search for Excellence Award and the Irene Seppanen Award.

Myrna was known for her exceptional generosity and had a gift for making everyone feel welcome. She was the first to help a neighbor or friend and prepared many meals and provided transportation for many appointments. Her impact was far reaching and will be missed by many.

There is no question that the greatest joy in her life was her seven grandchildren. Nothing made her happier than having her grandchildren with her, as they enjoyed fishing, swimming, boating, hunting, and snowmobiling in the Alexandria area. Myrna attended many of her grandchildren’s events both in MN and MT, and she always cheered the loudest.

Myrna was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jack; and nephew, Joe Iglehart. She is survived by her husband, Kai; sons Allan (Dianna), Paul (Meghan) and Peter (Lisa); seven grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will take place this summer.
