Melvin “Mel” Henry Jasmer was born on December 26, 1931, to Henry and Viola (Baumgartner) on their farm near Verndale, Minnesota in Bartlett Township, Todd County.  He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bartlett Township.  Mel attended District 42 country school during his elementary school years and attended some high school in Verndale.  In March of 1952, Mel joined the U.S. Navy and was placed on the U.S. Albany based out of Norfolk, Virginia.

Mel was united in marriage to Ruby Lage on September 5, 1954, in El Monte, California at El Monte First Lutheran Church while Mel was still in the Navy. They would not be reunited until Mel was discharged from the Navy 18 months later. The couple lived in El Monte, California for a few years before returning to Minnesota.  The couple bought a resort on Lake Ida called Camp Omaha.  They owned and operated the resort for 39 years. Mel and Ruby moved to Lake Miltona upon their retirement in 1997.

Mel became a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria in May of 1958, continuing that membership for the rest of his life.  He owned a classic 1956 F-100 Ford Pickup and belonged to the Vintage Car Club. Mel enjoyed giving rides to the grandkids in his 1949 Jeep and loved making people smile.

Mel died on Monday, January 2, 2023, at St. Williams Living Center in Parkers Prairie at the age of 91.  He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Ruby, of Miltona; son, Rodney of Miltona; grandchildren, Alisha Jasmer (Art Pierson) of Santa Clarita, CA; Erica Jasmer of Denver, CO; and Peter (Kallie) Jasmer of Shafer, MN; brother, Gordon (Sharon) Jasmer of Miltona.  Mel is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Viola; sisters, Henrietta Schultz and Elaine Walther; and daughter-in-law, Valerie Jasmer.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 7, 2023, at Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.  Per Mel’s request he would like you to wear “everyday” clothes so he would have been able to recognize you.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Zion Lutheran School in Alexandria.
