Mary Dorothy Volk was born on December 8, 1950, to Paul & Alice (Werth) Feist in Minot, ND. She was raised in Harvey, ND and graduated from Harvey High School in 1969. Following her high school graduation, she attended Jack’s Hairstyling College in Minot and began her career as a beautician in 1970.
Mary was united in marriage to Ken Volk on September 4, 1971, at St. Cecelia’s Catholic Church in Harvey. She worked as a beautician in Minot, Maddock, and Harvey before opening “Mary’s Hair Hut” in Harvey, ND, where the couple lived and worked until 1984 when the family moved to Wahpeton and later to Fargo, eventually settling in Alexandria in 1988. Mary loved being a beautician and took so much pride in her appearance. She would never dream of leaving the house without her hair and make-up done, especially her lipstick!
Mary volunteered for many years in various churches and schools as a classroom assistant, Vacation Bible School assistant, Religious Education Instructor, Office Assistant and support group leader to high school students. She loved dogs and would bring hers in to visit elementary school classrooms in Alexandria. Mary worked for many years for the Caller Survivor Network of Minnesota where she was able to use her gift of gab with people who just needed someone to talk to. Her favorite job was the one as a Wal-Mart greeter, there she could talk to everyone that walked through the door, learning more about them than most people know about their friends.
Mary loved her family, she was so proud of her children, Shane & Kendra, and never missed an opportunity to tell you all about them, what they were doing and all they had accomplished. She never missed a game or meet, even those cold football games and track meets. Mary was famous for making her family take pictures, always telling them they’d be glad to have all these pictures “when I’m dead someday” – she was right about that. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always bragging about what “good kids” they are.
Mary is survived by her husband, Ken; children Shane (Stephanie) Volk of Willmar, MN; Kendra (Brian) Lennes of Osakis, MN; grandchildren Abigail, Jonathan (Isabelle) and Gretchen Volk; Austin, Blake & Julia Lennes; and great-granddaughters Everleigh and Wrenley Volk. Mary is also survived by her siblings: Paul Jr (Jennifer) Feist; Paulette Feist; Debi (Tomio) Takeshita; Tim (Sally) Feist; and as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, sister Michelle and brother David.
