February 14, 1928 — May 6, 2025

Alexandria

Lee E. Doering was the fourth born child of Edwin Doering and Alma (Rischmiller) Doering at Gaylord, MN, born on February 14, 1928. Lee received his early education in Gaylord, and graduated with honors from Gaylord High School in 1946. He was active in school activities as well as athletics. During this period he became an Eagle Scout. After graduation from High School Lee enlisted in the US Army serving in the 19th regiment of the 24th Infantry Division in Beppu, Kyushu Japan. He obtained the rank of Sergeant and was honorably discharged in late 1947. Immediately thereafter he enrolled at Gustavus Adolphus College, graduating in 1951, majoring in Math. He was then employed as a Claim Adjuster with Hardware Mutual Insurance Company and was transferred to Sioux Falls, S.D., where he met the love of his life, Joan Erickson. Lee and Joan were married on June 14, 1953 at Augustana Lutheran Church in St. James, MN. Also in 1953, Lee enrolled in Law School, at William Mitchell College of Law obtaining the Juris Law Degree Cum Laude in 1957. Lee and Joan moved to Marshall, MN where they raised their two daughters. It was also in Marshall that Lee met Warren Quarnstrom, with whom they founded the Quarnstrom and Doering Law Firm. Lee also practiced law at a satellite office in Wood Lake, MN and served as Board Chairman of the Wood Lake Bank Corporation for 18 years. While in Marshall Lee was active in many community organizations. He was past President of the Marshall Chamber of Commerce, and the Marshall Golf Club. He also was the Charter Chairman of the Senior Citizen’s Commission in Marshall, and served as President of his church, First Lutheran. Lee continued the practice of law for 38 years, retiring in 1993, and moving to their home on Lake Le Homme Dieu in Alexandria, MN. At that time they also began wintering in Naples, Florida and traveled to many other destinations. Lee loved nature, especially hunting and fishing with travels to Canada and Alaska. Lee’s joy was to entice a flock of mallards to enter his decoys on his favorite marsh and then to enjoy his favorite dinner of roasted wild duck. A year after Joan’s passing in 2015, Lee was reacquainted with Cleone Sherman who was a family friend for many years while living in Marshall. Cleone was a special friend to Lee during their “golden years” at Grand Arbor. Lee was preceded in death by his wife Joan in 2015 and his daughter, Pam Bergstrand in 1993. He is survived by his daughter, Jill Jacobson (Joe) in Alexandria, MN and three grandchildren: Grandson, Dr. Mark Bergstrand (Dr. Maria Bergstrand) of Minnetonka, MN, Granddaughter, Dr. Ann Johnson ( Dr. Bob Johnson) of Spicer, MN, and Amy Kulus (Danny Kulus) of Shoreview MN and Son in law, Dr. Paul Bergstrand (Paula) of Alexandria MN.
