LaVern Theresa Bitzan, a cherished mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2026, at the age of 98. LaVern was born on August 22, 1928, the daughter of William and Rose (Zwack) Ritten in Millerville Township, MN. She was a lifelong resident of the area, deeply rooted in her community and her faith.
LaVern was baptized and confirmed at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church and graduated from Brandon High School in 1946. She found her soulmate, Richard Bitzan Sr., at a parish dance. They were united in marriage at the same church on June 18, 1946, and together they raised a beautiful family of ten children on their farm Northwest of Millerville. She was a devoted member of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church. LaVern was the heart of her home, helping with everything from milking cows to tending chickens and all other jobs surrounding farm life, all while growing a robust vegetable garden to feed the family. Known for her kindness, patience, and calm demeanor, LaVern had a heart full of pure love for everyone she met. She shared many memorable adventures with Richard and their friends on road trips and hunting trips. Later in life she enjoyed new hobbies like golfing, bowling, and playing cards—especially hand and foot! She was also known for her special gift of quilting, creating a beautiful quilt for each of her children and grandchildren.
LaVern was passionate about family gatherings, where she cherished the moments spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She babysat her grandchildren for many years, growing that special bond with each of them. Until her last days, she could tell you their names and important events in their lives. She cherished her large picture board as it helped her to keep everyone close to her heart.
LaVern is survived by her loving family, sons, David (Florence) Bitzan, Richard Jr, (Jean) Bitzan, John (Kathy) Bitzan, Francis (Marlene) Bitzan, and LeRoy (Melissa) Bitzan; daughters, Kathleen (Leon) Revering, Marian (James) Dorn, Donna (Arthur) Dorn, and Sharon (Mark) Thoennes; 38 grandchildren, 82 great grandchildren, 20 great great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins; and brother-in-law, Marvin (Darlene) Wagner.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Richard Sr. Bitzan, infant daughter Karen Bitzan; one grandchild, and three great grandchildren; brothers, Clarence Ritten and Arnold Ritten; sisters, Lorraine Thoennes and Darlene Wagner.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at 11 AM at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Millerville, Minnesota.
