John David Kreft was welcomed into the world on October 25, 1957, by John and Iona (Krueger) Kreft in Twin Falls, ID. Born into a family that relocated frequently due to his father's career, John experienced life in various cities, including Alexandria, MN, Minot, ND, and Devils Lake, ND. His family returned to Alexandria where he graduated from Jefferson High School in 1975. During his high school years, John took the opportunity to play baseball in a summer league. After high school, John briefly attended the University of Minnesota before transferring to Alexandria Technical and Community College and studying Avionics and Applied Science.
After obtaining his Avionics Degree and Associate of Applied Science Degree, John began his professional journey repairing airplane communication systems at an airport in Des Moines, IA, where he dedicated two years to honing his craft. He then moved to Minot, ND, where he spent fifteen years working in the Avionics Department at Pietsch Flying Service, further establishing himself as a reliable expert in the field of installing and maintaining the electronic systems used on aircraft. After working in Eveleth, MN, for approximately four years, he returned to Alexandria. John then pursued further education in Computer and Voice Networking at Alex Tech. He then worked various temporary and permanent jobs at a number of companies in the Alexandria area. One company of note was 3M. Iona Kreft worked there for many, many years, and John also worked there during the summer following his high school graduation through a program 3M had for children of employees.
John described himself as a proud uncle who loves his nephew. His cherished relationship with his nephew, Brady Kreft, was a highlight of his life; John eagerly anticipated their time together, especially bonding over computer games. He was always there for his brother Mark and nephew Brady, readily helping them with whatever they needed, including car repairs.
John enjoyed activities including scuba diving, archery, target shooting, and weightlifting. His other interests included electronics, computers, astronomy, books, classic movies, rock and roll and R&B music, and cigars. He appreciated beauty and was passionate about the things he loved, often expressing this through the beautiful gifts he chose for others.
Throughout his life, John made significant memories, particularly in the wake of his mother's passing, as he worked hard to keep the spirit of Christmas alive for his family.
