December 16, 1944 — August 9, 2025

Alexandria

James Thomas Wirth, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2025, at the age of 80. Born the son of James F. and Marjorie (Worthington) Wirth on December 16, 1944, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, James lived a life rich with family time, love, and music that left a mark on all who knew him.

James spent many summers at Camp Ballentine in Alexandria, where he created cherished memories with family that would last a lifetime. He graduated from Shattuck High School in Faribault, where he not only left his mark on the ice as a hockey player, but also gained recognition as a proud member of the renowned Crack Squad drill team. Adding even more to his abilities, James received training as a medic in the Army and Air Force Reserves.

James continued his education at the University of Minnesota, where he earned a degree in economics in 1967. Shortly thereafter, he ventured to San Francisco to train as a stockbroker with the Dean Witter Company, setting the stage for a successful career in finance.

He later returned to Minnesota, where he married Marnie Warner, and together they welcomed their son, Tyler. Years later, James married Nancy Toleen, and they welcomed two daughters, Lesley and Whitney. Together, they created cherished memories living on Lake Latoka in Alexandria, where James proudly started the first Dean Witter office in 1980. He enjoyed a long and fulfilling career with Dean Witter, Piper Jaffray, and Merrill Lynch, ultimately retiring in 2005. Beyond his professional life, he was passionate about woodworking, fishing, and taking joy rides in his treasured 1964 Corvette. An amazing and gifted pianist, he had a rare talent for playing by ear, often sharing his love for music with family and friends. His home was always filled with laughter as he encouraged and uplifted those around him. He had a unique gift for making everyone feel special. After a chat with him, one always left feeling lighter and brighter. He was a dedicated fan of his beloved yet heartbreaking Minnesota sports teams and found pleasure in gathering with family and friends, especially his adored grandchildren.

James is survived by his son, Tyler (Mariah) Wirth; daughters, Lesley Wirth and Whitney (Mike) Molitor; grandchildren, Bennett Wirth, Aurora Wirth, Jaxon Wirth, Leni Molitor, and Georgia Molitor; brother, Steve (Kathryn) Wirth; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, David Wirth and George Wirth.
