Herbert H. Steffl

Herbert H. Steffl, 86, of Alexandria passed away on Sunday, July 30, 2023, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's. Visitation will be held Thursday, August 3 from 5-7 pm at Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria with a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, August 4 at 11 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alexandria.

Herbert was born on May 1, 1937, to Rose (Eisenbarth) and Leo Harold Steffl at the family farm in Morgan, Minnesota. He graduated from Morgan High School in 1955 and attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota where he received a degree in Dairy Manufacturing in 1959. On June 11, 1959, he married Ruth Marie Zimmermann also from Morgan. The couple moved to Glendale, California where Herb worked for Carnation Foods for 1 year. After leaving California, Herb worked for Farmers Co-op Creamery in Volga South Dakota until 1966. The couple then moved to Alexandria where he resided until his death. He worked for the USDA, then Land O Lakes until he retired. Throughout his life, Herb enjoyed fishing, gardening, and woodworking. He was a joyful son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who loved a good joke and always found time to talk with all the people he loved so dearly. He will be greatly missed.

Herb is survived by his wife Ruth of Alexandria, son Tom of Farwell; son Jim (Deena) Steffl of Alexandria, Cathy (Tom) Zwilling of Boiling Springs, South Carolina, Becky (Joe) Hill of Stillwater. Grandchildren Leo (Louisa) Steffl, Jenna Steffl and Jack Steffl, Alexis (Ben) Johnson, Adam Zwilling, Erin (Anthony) Vecchi, Josh (Abby) Hill, Ellie Hill and 5 great grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers Bob (Patti) Steffl of New Ulm, Ed (Denise) Steffl of Morgan, and sister Pat (Dave) Huschke of Midland, Michigan and Carolyn (Bill) Steffl of Redwood Falls. He is preceded in death by his parents Leo and Rose and brother Bill.
