Frances Arlene McClellan October 27, 1929 – October 25, 2025
Frances Arlene McClellan was born on October 27, 1929, to Clifford and Edna (Malo) Walter. She grew up on a farm near Osakis, Minnesota, where she learned the values of hard work, faith, and family that guided her throughout her life. She was baptized at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Barrett, Minnesota and confirmed at Osakis Lutheran Church. Frances attended the Osakis Country School and later Osakis High School, graduating in 1947.
After graduation, Frances worked at Yuetter’s Bakery in Alexandria and later started a job in St. Paul. When her mother’s health began to decline, Frances returned home to lovingly care for her, a reflection of the kindness and devotion that defined her character. After her mother’s passing, she remained on the family farm for a time, helping wherever she was needed.
Frances married Howard McClellan, they raised three children: Sharon, Joyce, and Carl. The family lived in Alexandria. Frances dedicated herself to her family and their home, providing warmth, guidance, and unconditional love. In 1971, when the Viking Plaza Mall opened in Alexandria, Frances began working at White Mart (later Thrifty White). She enjoyed her work and the many friendships she built there over the years. After more than four decades of service, she retired on July 30, 2014.
Frances will be remembered as a strong, determined, and caring woman whose greatest joy was her family. Her faith, loved ones, and friends were the center of her life. She rarely missed her grandchildren’s special events, cheering them on with pride and love. Before dementia affected her later years, Frances found joy in baking, gardening, walking, and reading. Her home was a welcoming place where a cup of coffee and homemade cookies were waiting for anyone who stopped by.
Frances passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 25, 2025, just two days shy of her 96th birthday. She is survived by her three children: Sharon (David) Odland, Joyce Hassler, and Carl McClellan; six grandchildren: Jason Henke (Nisha), Kris (Brooke) Odland, Laura Zimmer, Eric (Teresa) Odland, Carrie Hassler (Jamie), and Katie Hassler; eight great-grandchildren; her brother, David (Doris) Walter; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her infant sister, and many beloved relatives and friends.
