March 27, 1935 — April 28, 2026

Alexandria, MN

Eugene John Burghardt, known affectionately to many as Gene, passed away peacefully with family by his side on April 28, 2026, in Alexandria, MN. Born on March 27, 1935, in Grand Island, NE, Gene’s life was marked by unwavering dedication to his family, country, and career.

Gene’s early years were shaped by his fun-loving and adventurous spirit, optimism, and mischievousness. His family moved from Grand Island, NE, to Jewell, IA, settling in New Ulm, MN, in 1947. Demonstrating a strong sense of responsibility from a young age, he left school after completing eighth grade to assist in the family honey bee business. His commitment to service extended beyond the home when he entered the U.S. Army and served as a heavy weapons infantry sergeant for two years, stationed in Salzburg, Austria, during the Korean War. This period highlighted his courage and dedication to his country.

Following his military service, Gene returned to civilian life with a strong work ethic that would define his professional journey. He worked at Gene Schugel Trucking and then Kraft Foods in New Ulm. Together with his brother, Francis, he co-owned and operated Burghardt Trucking. His commitment to community safety was evident during his tenure as a police officer for the city of New Ulm from 1959 to 1965, where he played an instrumental role in founding The New Ulm Auxiliary Police Force. Together with his friend, Wayne Preston, Gene co-owned and operated City Sanitation. Finally, the lake country lured Gene and his family to Alexandria where he served as Production Supervisor at 3M from 1968 until his retirement in 1996.

Gene’s personal life was equally rich and fulfilling. On May 1, 1962, he married Joyce Goche at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Seaforth, MN. Their 64 years of marriage were a testament to enduring love and partnership while raising two daughters, Grace and Beth. Gene was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His greatest joy was spending time with family.

Beyond his family and career, Gene found joy in hobbies that reflected his faith and his love for people, nature, simple pleasures and craftsmanship. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, managing a hobby farm, golfing, wood carving, painting, socializing, the “occasional” joke, storytelling, playing cards, and volunteering at church. These interests added a richness to his life, demonstrating his appreciation for God’s creation, artistry, and laughter.

Eugene Burghardt’s legacy is one of hard work, service to others, a deep faith in God, and an endless devotion to his family. He leaves behind a family strengthened by his love and faith. His life will be remembered with respect and heartfelt gratitude. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to someone in need.

Gene was preceded in death by his loving parents, John and Esther Burghardt; his sisters, Joan (Regner), Mary (Wildt) and Rosella (Cook); and his brothers, Francis and John.

Gene is survived by his loving wife, Joyce; daughters, Grace Burghardt and Beth (Mark) Telander; granddaughters, Nicole (Zachary) Karelis and Jamie (Nathan) DuChene; and great-grandchildren, Greta Karelis, Walter Karelis, Tessa DuChene, Arthur Karelis, Cora DuChene, and Martha Karelis. He is also survived by his sister Carolyn (Wellman) and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial funds received by the family will be given as one donation to St. Mary’s School via a scholarship endowment fund.
