Duane Huizinga

June 23, 1934 — November 19, 2020

Alexandria

Duane Willis Huizinga was born June 23, 1934 in Big Stone County near Ortonville, Minnesota, the third of seven children to Siert and Hulda (Schmeichel) Huizinga. When Duane was a young boy the family moved to Evansville and eventually to Alexandria.  Some of his early work history includes paperboy and setting pins at Garden Center before they had machines. He helped on the farm at home and later farmed with brother Lyndon. Duane had a great love for country music, Hank Williams in particular, and enjoyed playing guitar and singing. Duane loved to play cards and took it pretty seriously. He treasured time spent with family and was an amazing father, brother, uncle and grandfather.

Duane married Betty Jane Krause in 1967 and had one son, Galen. They lived in Alexandria while Duane worked for Land O Lakes. Shortly before Betty passed away in 1972 he went into building spec homes in the Alexandria area and later worked for Douglas Machines for 15 years until retiring in 2001.

Duane married Agnes Zastrow in October of 1981 and they lived in the Alexandria area. Agnes passed away at Bethany Home in 2007. Duane eventually sold his last home and moved to Grand Arbor in October of 2011.

Duane is survived by his son Galen (Kari), stepchildren Jerry (Carol) Zastrow, Sharyl Mohawk, Judy (Aldon) Carlson, Donna Moen, Rick (Lori) Zastrow, Randy Zastrow and Jeff Zastrow, sister Eunadelle Nardello,  brothers Butch Huizinga and Elroy (Brenda) Huizinga and many nieces, nephews and Agnes’ grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Eldon, Lyndon and Wendell, stepdaughter Marjorie Roob and stepson Russell Zastrow.

Services for Duane will be at a later date in 2021.
