Dorothy Schulz

July 5, 1919 — April 8, 2022

Alexandria

Dorothy Marion (Hass) Schulz, was born July 5, 1919 to Paul Hass Sr. and Marie (Jarchow) Hass in Swanville, Minnesota.  She was one of six children.

After the death of her mother at age six, Dorothy was taken care of by a grandmother, an aunt, and a friend hired by her father to help take care of four of the children.  At age 11, she and her youngest brother Loren were taken in by foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Schmidt, in Leaf Valley, Minnesota.

Dorothy was confirmed June 18, 1933 at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Leaf Valley.

She was united in marriage to August W. Schulz Jr. in Leaf Valley on October 21, 1941.  They lived in Fort Meade, South Dakota where August was in the Army.  After his honorable discharge, they lived in Appleton, Minnesota, later moving to Alexandria, Minnesota where August was in the construction business.

In 1955, they moved to Moorhead, Minnesota where August was a bricklayer.  Dorothy was a saleslady for 37 years at Mrs. Blow’s Sewing Center, two Ladies’ Ready-to-Wear stores, and Neubarth’s Jewelry in Moorhead, Minnesota.  After retiring, Dorothy helped her beloved daughter Bonnie at the Canine Clipper in Fargo, North Dakota.

In her later years, she returned to Alexandria, where she lived at Bethany on the Lake.

Dorothy was an accomplished seamstress.  She was also a gracious hostess, whether at home in Moorhead or at the cabin on Lake Miltona.  She enjoyed tending to her flowers and derived much joy from time in the garden.  Dorothy even beautified the island near the cabin, wading through the water carrying a lawnmower to mow the grass every weekend.

Her favorite thing was spending time visiting with family and friends.  She always had Tupperware containers full of goodies ready for visitors to stop by.  One of the greatest joys in her life was the birth of her granddaughter and later, her two great-grandchildren.  Dorothy was always a vision of loveliness, with a snazzy outfit and her beautiful white hair perfectly coiffed.  Above all, Dorothy was a woman of deep faith, and was ready to go home to be with her Lord and Savior.

Dorothy Schulz died on Friday, April 8, 2022.  She is survived by her son Robert and his wife Dee; granddaughter Heidi and her husband Tom Calhoun-Lopez; great-grandchildren Tommy and Isabel Calhoun-Lopez; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband August; daughter Bonnie; brothers Elmer, Loren, and Paul; sisters Helen May Labraaten and Lonnie Drussel; and several nieces.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, April 15, 2022, 11:00 a.m. at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Leaf Valley with visitation one  hour prior to the service at the church.  Burial will be at Ebenezer Cemetery.   Service will be livestreamed and recorded for those unable to attend.
