Donald Julian Kanten

Donald Julien Kanten was born on June 10, 1939, in Montevideo Hospital. He was raised on a farm by Milan, Minnesota. He graduated from Milan High School in the class of 1957. He served in the Minnesota National Guard for 9 years.

On May 21, 1960, Don married Mary Ann Carl in Appleton Congregational Church. They were married for 65 years.

Don loved people and could talk to anybody, maybe that was the salesman in him! He worked at many jobs but ended up in the insurance business for around 17 years. He always wanted to own a resort and eventually Don and Mary bought one on Lake Osakis, which they owned for 18 years.

Don loved working with wood and built Mary pieces of furniture. Don also got into wood carving.

Don and Mary were blessed with 2 children, a son, James (Gene) Kanten, and a daughter, Lori (late husband, Luther) Westad, 6 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.

On Monday April 6, 2026, Don passed away at Knute Nelson Care Center in Alexandria.  

Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2026, 2:00 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home.
