~ A Celebration of a Life Well-Lived~
“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived”. ~Henry David Thoreau
Al “Doc” B. Jahnke of Alexandria, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2026, at home with his wife. He was born on December 29, 1952, in Parkers Prairie, and grew up on the family farm.
Doc graduated from Parkers Prairie High School and then went on to tech school in the culinary arts. During this time, he worked at the Darling Dude Ranch (now Arrowwood) where he made many lifetime friends. His sense of adventure took him west. After a brief stay in Denver, he ended up in Aspen, where he lived until 1990. It was there that he met his wife, Sue. Their wedding was a “traditional Aspen” affair--outdoors on a mountainside overlooking a valley with a river running through it. Their lives were filled with skiing, hiking, and camping, as well as a lot of traveling. After several years of cooking, Doc got a job with Rocky Mountain Airways, which allowed for all that traveling. He later returned to cooking at a gourmet wild game restaurant, Krabloonik (an Inuit word meaning “big eyebrows”). It was also a sled dog kennel and ran sleds throughout the winter, serving lunch of homemade soups and breads to the riders. Doc and Sue moved to Alexandria in 1990, where they found their own cozy home in the woods.
Doc is survived by his wife, Sue; brothers Michael (Debra), and James (Margee), and sister Julie, beloved aunts and uncles, and many nieces and nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, Darold and Norma Laabs Jahnke and a brother, Mark (Michele).
A Memorial Service will take place at 1:00 PM on Friday, September 25, 2026, at Luther Crest Bible Camp in Alexandria, Minnesota. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
