Agnes Theresa Johnson

April 18, 1926 — January 21, 2023

Alexandria

Agnes Theresa Johnson was born on April 18, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois.  She attended St. Agatha School and graduated from Harrison High School.  Agnes was employed at the Federal Bank of Chicago while attending Bryant and Stratton Business College.

On May 18, 1946, Agnes was united in marriage to Chief Petty Officer Carl A. Johnson of Nelson, Minnesota, who was an instructor at the Naval Avionics School after a tour of duty in the Pacific.  Carl and Agnes made their home in Alexandria where they raised six children.

In 1963, Carl purchased the A&W Drive-In where Agnes and the children helped with the business.  She was elected secretary of the A&W State Operators Association.  Later, she and Carl opened The Creamery Ice Cream Parlor in the Viking Plaza Mall, until Agnes retired.  After retiring, they found great pleasure with their thirteen grandchildren and traveling south in the winter until Carl’s death in 1996, three months before their fiftieth wedding anniversary.

Agnes enjoyed gardening, reading, her bible study groups, music, her computer, and friends.  A homemaker first, she enjoyed cooking and baking, and the home that Carl built for their family.  She found joy and humor in all she did.  She was a charter member of the Alexandria Garden Club, the VFW Auxiliary and a member of the MECA computer club.

Agnes died on Saturday, January 21, 2023, at Nelson Gables at the age of 96.  She is survived by her three sons and two daughters; Claudia (Roger) Brown of Gilbert, AZ, James Johnson of Alexandria, MN, Gregory (Beth) Johnson of Alexandria, Paul (Casey) Johnson of Hibbing, MN, Katherine (Gary) Blair of Land O Lakes, FL; thirteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and one great, great-granddaughter. Agnes is preceded in death by her husband Carl; daughter, Mary Marquette of Glenwood Springs, CO; great-grandson, Brody Butler; and son-in-law, Marlo Marquette.
