Shirley Ann Battey

October 5, 1928 ~ September 13, 2018 (age 89)

Shirley Ann (Travis) Battey was born in Mobridge, SD on October 5th, 1928 to parents Ray and Ellen (Anderson) Travis.  Shirley and her brother Gordon enjoyed growing up in the small town of Mobridge. She attended Mobridge High School where she had the honor of being elected Homecoming Queen her senior year.  She attended Yankton College in Yankton, SD for one year, followed by a year at Mac Murry College in Illinois, until transferring and obtaining a B.A. from the University of South Dakota in 1950.  She was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and it was there where she met her husband of 65 years, Richard H. Battey, who preceded her in death on May 6, 2017.  They were married in 1951 and after Richard finished law school and served two years in the Army, they made their home in Redfield, SD where he practiced law and they raised their three children David, Russell, and Dianne.

While living in Redfield, Shirley was active at the First Congregational Church, Circle Group, and Altar Guild.  She delivered Meals on Wheels for 9 years, served on the Redfield Library Board for 15 years, and was a lifetime member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.). In 1985, she and Richard moved to Rapid City, SD when Richard was appointed to the federal bench as a judge for the United States District Court. Shirley then continued to be active in Altar Guild and Circle at the 1st Congregational United Church of Christ in Rapid City, SD. She was an extremely devoted wife and mother, grandmother, great grandmother, daughter, sister, and volunteer. She had a deep love of horses, owning several during her life including her beloved horse, Hindu, as a teenager, and enjoyed golfing and traveling with Richard.

Shirley passed away on Thursday, September 13th, 2018 at the age of 89, three weeks before her 90th birthday, at Alomere Health in Alexandria, MN.  She is preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Rhodie Travis, and brother Gordon.

Shirley is survived by her children: David (Lucie) Battey of Alexandria, MN, Russell (Marilyn) Battey of Watertown, SD, Dianne (Stephen) Raebel of Lake Barrington, IL; seven grandchildren: Lindsay (Chad) Lundeen of Chaska, MN, Courtney, (Scottie) Walter of Maple Grove, MN, Heather (Chris) Osborn of Aberdeen, SD, Ryan Battey of Fargo, ND, Travis (Brenda) Raebel of Chicago, IL, A.J. (Lissa) Raebel of Waukesha, WI, and Lenna (Tim) Kadlec of Kenosha, WI; ten great-grandchildren, and sister-in-laws, Susan Travis and Marilyn Gellhaus. 

A graveside service will be held at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD on Friday, October 12, 2018 at 1:30 PM. A Celebration of Life will follow from 3:30-5:30 PM at the Arrowhead Country Club in Rapid City, SD. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to any local Meals on Wheels or P.E.O. Chapter.
