Paul Musaus Arnesen

February 12, 1923 ~ November 21, 2018 (age 95)

Paul Musaus Arnesen was born Feb 12, 1923 to  Sigurd and Martha Arnesen in Brooklyn, NY.  He died November 21, 2018 at Knute Nelson Grand Arbor Meadows unit.  He attended college and medical school at New York University.   While attending the university, he served as a hospital corpsman stationed at the Brooklyn Naval Yard.  He met Dorothy Roholt and they married in 1946.  They returned to her home state of Minnesota where he completed his internship and entered private practice.  He returned to active duty during the Korean war and served as a medical officer.  Post war he moved to Wisconsin, began his orthopaedic residency and continued service in the Naval Reserve until 1966.  He practiced in Fon du Lac (WI), at the University of Minnesota and in Mankato (MN).  He retired in 1993 and eventually moved full time to Alexandria, MN where he and Dorothy had enjoyed their home on Lake Le Homme Dieu for many years.

Following Dorothy’s death, he continued his service to others volunteering with many organizations including the Douglas County Historical Society, Knute Nelson Hospice and the Kiwanis Club.  His favorite volunteering opportunity was by far working with the many 5th graders through the Kiwanis Terrific Kids program. Because of his dedication to these volunteer groups, he was named a Douglas County Outstanding Senior Citizen and recognized as a runner-up at the state Outstanding Senior Citizen program at the Minnesota State Fair in 2016.

While at Grand Arbor, he established many new friendships and was an active member of that community.  He loved playing bridge with his “ladies” and was proud of the sweet treats he baked - never bringing the same thing twice!  The happy hour group had their special table in the dining area and enjoyed many great laughs and stories together.  His close friendship with Dona Wagner provided him with great support and companionship during these years.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents (Sigurd and Martha), sisters (Norma and Ruth) and his wife Dorothy.  He is survived by his brother Sigurd, his children and their spouses (Paul and Juli, Glenn and Nancy, Marilyn and Jo, Phillip) and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at Grand Arbor Community Room (4403 Pioneer Road, Alexandria, MN) on Thursday, November 29th between 10:00 am and 12:00 noon.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Paul’s memory to any of his special volunteer organizations or a charity of your choice.
