Lucille Mae (Hardie) Bjerke

December 6, 1919 ~ March 26, 2019 (age 99)

Lucille Mae Bjerke was born on December 6, 1919 in Rockham, South Dakota to Albert and Florence (Johnson) Hardie.  She was the second of six children.

Lucille attended a one room country school for grades 1-8.  She graduated from high school in Brandt, South Dakota.  Following high school Lucille worked in the Post Office in Clear Lake, SD for five years.  She later worked for the Farm Security Office as a secretary and bookkeeper.  Lucille was employed by the Selective Service during WWII.

Lucille was united in marriage to Kenneth Bjerke on December 31, 1946.  The couple moved to Clear Lake, SD where they owned a Standard Oil Station for nine years.  In 1958, Lucille and Ken moved with their three children to Clarissa.  They purchased a Coast to Coast Store, which they both owned and operated. 

Lucille and Ken moved to Alexandria in 1967, where Lucille worked for Selective Service and Ken worked for 3M.  In 1976, Lucille began working for the Farmers Home Administration Office in Alexandria. 

Together Lucille and Ken celebrated 63 years of marriage, three children, and four grandchildren. 

In July 2006, the decision was made to sell their hobby farm and move to an apartment in Arabella Manor, where they resided for 10 years.

Lucille passed away on March 26, 2019.  She is survived by her three children: Craig Bjerke (Esther), Dawn Reed (Larry Ruether), Kathy Walters; four grandchildren: Dustin Walters, Erin Mazzone (Taylor) of Tucson, AZ, Eric Bjerke (Jenny) of Alexandria, Jade Bjerke of St. Cloud; two great grandchildren: Roman Mazzone and Connor Bjerke; siblings: Mavis Stoltenburg and Alvin Hardie.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ken; parents, two brothers and one sister.

Lucille will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.  She loved traveling to Arizona with Ken, ballroom and square dancing, gardening and cooking for everyone!  Lucille was a devoted member of First Lutheran Church.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 29, 2019, 4:00 – 7:00 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.  Funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2019, 2:00 PM at First Lutheran Church in Alexandria.  Burial will be at Kinkead Cemetery.
