Joan Henrietta Thompson

March 22, 1931 ~ August 23, 2018 (age 87)

Joan Henrietta Jensen was born March 22, 1931 in Holmes City, MN, the daughter of William and Lydia (Schoewe) Jensen.  She was raised in Holmes City and Leaf Valley, MN where she attended country school. Joan graduated from high school in Alexandria, MN

Joan began working for the Oldsmobile dealer in Alexandria as a bookkeeper. She was working there when she met Harold “Jim” Thompson. They were united in marriage on June 22, 1952. The couple made their home in Alexandria in Victoria Heights and were blessed with three children. In 1963, Joan and Jim moved their family to the east side of Lake Carlos where they have lived for fifty-five years.

Joan was a member of several book clubs over the years. She was also a member of the Belles Lettres. Correspondence was important to Joan and she was always prepared to send someone a card for any occasion. Joan volunteered her time delivering Meals on Wheels. She was active in her church and looked forward to the Mystery Tour bus trips sponsored by the church.

Joan’s family was very important to her and she lived life as an at-home mom. Joan was an excellent cook and loved baking for her family and friends; brownies were her specialty. Preparing meals for her children and grandchildren and spending time with them was very special. She enjoyed traveling with her family and took many summer vacation trips, and winter skiing trips, with Jim and her boys. Joan was also very fashion conscious and loved to go shopping with her family and friends.

On Thursday, August 23, 2018 Joan lost her battle with pancreatic cancer at age eighty-seven. She was preceded in death by two sons, Bradley Thompson and infant Jeffrey Thompson. Joan is survived by her husband, Jim Thompson of Alexandria; son, Michael Thompson and wife, Nancy, of Alexandria; grandchildren, James Thompson and wife, Vanessa, Craig Thompson and wife, Jamie, and Taryn Thompson; great granddaughter, Isabell Thompson; brothers, Charles Jensen and wife, Audrey, of Parkers Prairie, MN and Kenneth Jensen and wife, Jan, of Alexandria; and sister, Rose Kluver and husband, Harold, of Alexandria.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at First Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Reverend Greg Billberg will officiate. Interment will follow in the Kinkead Cemetery in Alexandria. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM Monday at Anderson Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at church.
