Robert Vikander

January 3, 1938 — April 27, 2017

Robert John Vikander was born January 3, 1938 in Aberdeen, SD, the son of Walter and Martha (Erickson) Vikander. He was raised in Aberdeen where he attended school. In 1956 bob graduated from Central High School and continued his education at Augustana College. He received a degree in education. While in high school Bob played football, basketball, baseball and was on the track team. Sports were a big part of his life. At Augustana he played football on the college team. Bob also played town baseball.

On August 5, 1956 Bob was united in marriage to Beverly Beller. The couple was blessed with four children. He taught history at Ipswich, SD and at Miller, SD. Bob continued his interest in sports through coaching. He coached the football and basketball teams at Ipswich and Miller.

While living in Miller Bob continued his education and received his Master's Degree in education. He served Huron College for one year as an admissions counselor. The largest portion, thirty-four years, of Bob's career were spent in Morris, MN where he served as Director of Admissions & Financial Aid for the University of Minnesota. His interest in sports continued as he served as assistant coach for the Cougars football program. Following his retirement Bob created a small consulting business, See Systems, which aided universities and colleges in the admissions process.

In addition to participating in sports and mentoring students through coaching Bob was also a fan. He was a season ticket holder of the Minnesota Vikings and was able to attend the final game in the Metrodome. He was also an avid Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Gopher's fan. In his retirement golf became his favorite hobby and sport. Weather permitting, Bob golfed eighteen holes every day. Bob also made time to attend the sporting events of his children and grandchildren.

On Thursday, April 27, 2017 Bob died at the age of seventy-nine years following a battle with Alzheimer's disease and pancreatic cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Richard & Marilyn Vikander; sister, Karen Morgan; sister-in-law, Betty Vikander; and brother-in-law, James Lenihan. Bob is survived by his wife Beverly Vikander of Alexandria; children, Debra Vikander of Alexandria; Amelia Quackenbush and husband, James, of Watertown, SD, Robert Vikander of Bloomington, MN and David Vikander and wife, Anna, of Granite Falls, MN; grandchildren, Adam Vikander, Johnathan Quackenbush and wife, Tracy, Stacy Quackenbush, Benjamin Quackenbush and wife, Tracy, Sara Peterson and husband, Curtis, Ryan Vikander, Casey Vikander and wife Ashly, William Vikander and wife, Jessica, Amber Syll, Ashley Vikander and Austin Vikander; great grandchildren, Elizabeth Quackenbush, Adalynn Quackenbush, Isabella Quackenbush, Roman Quackenbush, Everly Quackenbush, Eleanor Vikander, Evelyn Vikander and Ayden Vikander; brothers, Roger Vikander and wife, Kay, of Aberdeen and Raymond Vikander of Fargo, ND; sister, Kris Seiler and husband, Dennis, of Warner, SD; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Lenihan of Tucson, AZ.

A funeral service will be held 4 PM Monday, May 1, 2017 at the United Methodist Church in Alexandria. Interment will follow in the Riverside Memorial Cemetery at Aberdeen. Honorary urn bearers include all of Bob's grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 PM Sunday, April 30, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria and also one hour prior to the service at church.
