Richard Sammons

Richard Charles Sammons was born February 1, 1929 in Alexandria, MN, the son of Wallace and Aurella (Coykendall) Sammons. He attended high school in Alexandria where he graduated in 1947.
Richard was united in marriage to Josephine Robinson in October 1, 1951. They were together for twenty-eight years and were blessed with two children, Dave and Dan.
Richard served his country in the United States Marine Corp from 1946 to 1947. Beginning in 1948 Richard served in the United States Army. He served in the 7th Infantry Signal Corps. Richard repaired and installed radios in tanks and eventually served in Korea where he repaired radios on the front lines. He was discharged in 1954. Following his discharge Richard moved to Texas. He worked for many years for the Burroughs Corporation and was an expert at computers. He was united in marriage to Joan and they were together for twelve years. He attended Southmost College in Texas and graduated with honors majoring in English and history. He received his Master’s degree in 1987. Richard taught handicapped students at Southmost College for ten years. Following his retirement from teaching Richard returned to Alexandria.
Richard lived at the Alexson for several years before moving to Nelson Gables. Richard married Dorothy Oberg about six months prior to her death. On January 11, 2012 Richard moved to the Minnesota Veterans Home in Fergus Falls, MN where he has been well cared for.
Richard could often be seen walking his dog around Alexandria. Richard belonged to the Runestone Amateur Radio Club and had his amateur radio license. He also was active with the visually impaired in Alexandria
Richard loved to go dancing and enjoyed singing. At the Veterans Home he could be heard singing up and down the halls which often prompted other residents to join him in song.
Richard was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 936. He was also a faithful member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Alexandria.
On Tuesday, October 21, 2014 Richard died at the age of eighty-five years. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Jim and Alan Sammons. Richard is survived by his sons, David Sammons and wife Dorothy, of Bedford, TX, Dan Sammons of Arlington, TX; grandchildren, Kyle Sammons and wife, Laura, and Kristy Wolber and husband, Garth; great grandchildren, Boston and Izabel Sammons and Rylee, Reagan and Reese Wolber; sisters, Donna Tilley and husband, Jim, of New Richmond, WI and Florence Hetue of Oshkosh, WI; and one brother, Ken Sammons of Santa Ana, CA
A funeral service was held Monday, October 27, 2014 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ. Interment followed in Kinkead Cemetery at Alexandria. Military honors were provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 936, American Legion Post 87, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 235 and the Minnesota National Guard.
