Joan Marilyn Erickson was born on May 20, 1931, the only daughter to Elmer and Della (Stark) Erickson of St. James, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at Augustana Lutheran Church in St. James. Joan graduated from St. James High School in 1949 and then attended the University of Minnesota’s Dental Hygiene program graduating in 1951. Her first job was in Sioux Falls, SD, where she met her future husband, Lee Doering. They were united in marriage at Augustana Lutheran Church in St. James, MN on June 14, 1953. Joan worked in Minneapolis, MN as a dental hygienist from 1953 to June of 1957. Joan and Lee then moved to Marshall, MN, where they raised their two daughters. The couple were weekend residents of Alexandria until moving there permanently upon Lee’s retirement in 1993. At that time, they also began wintering in Naples, FL. Joan enjoyed playing in many bridge clubs, and in her younger days she played golf. She was a happy, friendly and nurturing person, and also very supportive to her daughters and their children. Lee and Jo were not only lovers, but also best friends.
Joan passed away on Friday April 17, 2015 at Ecumen Bethany Home at the age of 83. She is preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Della Erickson; and her daughter Pam Bergstrand.
Joan is survived by her husband of 61 years, Lee Doering; Daughter, Jill (Joe) Jacobson; grandchildren, Dr. Mark (Dr. Maria) Bergstrand, Ann (Bob Johnson-fiancANLGAC.) Bergstrand and Amy Jacobson; brother, James Erickson, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Calvary Lutheran Church, Hospice of Douglas County; both of Alexandria, or your memorial of choice.
